Child Protection Policy
Living Heritage Nursery is committed to protecting children from harm and ensuring their welfare and safety at all times.
Policy Statement
We believe that every child has the right to be safe and protected. We follow the Children Act 1989 and 2004, the EYFS framework, and Working Together to Safeguard Children guidance.
Objectives
- To protect children from harm, abuse, neglect, and exploitation
- To ensure staff are trained and vigilant in identifying signs of abuse
- To respond promptly and appropriately to any concerns
- To maintain accurate, secure records of all child protection matters
Designated Safeguarding Lead
The DSL leads on child protection practice, liaises with the LADO, ensures staff training, and maintains secure records. Any concerns should be reported to the DSL immediately.
Recognising Signs of Abuse
- Physical abuse — unexplained injuries, flinching, fear of going home
- Emotional abuse — withdrawn behaviour, low self-esteem, anxiety
- Sexual abuse — inappropriate sexual knowledge or behaviour
- Neglect — poor hygiene, lack of supervision, inadequate clothing
Responding to Concerns
- Listen and reassure the child without leading or questioning
- Record facts accurately using the child's own words
- Report immediately to the DSL
- The DSL will assess and make referrals where necessary
Record Keeping
All child protection records are stored securely and accessed only by authorised personnel. Records include dates, times, details of concerns, actions taken, and outcomes.
Working with Parents
We work openly and respectfully with families. Parents are informed of our child protection duties. We may act without parental consent if a child is at risk of significant harm.
